I know it is silly.

And I am loathe to admit it at times, but I am a heroes fan.
Somehow I made from the first season, through the second, and third and into this the fourth. And I have to say, the death of Nathan Petrelli really bummed me out.
But, hey, at least the show does kill characters off right?
There is risk involved ...

Them Hills

My friends are currently on tour, and I have been dancing like an idiot in my living room to their tunes. Now, I am always kind of torn on the idea if it is alright to be a fan of a friend's band. It can be confusing. Do you like the music so much because the person is so cool, or do you like the person so much because the music is so cool? Luckily in the case of Them Hills I don't find myself in this conundrum. The answer is simple; I like them both because they are both awesome. Fuck n A right!

Turns out the owners of the building that houses the House of Shields Bar in SF is not renewing their lease. So, by June no more House of Shields venue, unless of course something cool happens.
WTF right?

The Snakes The Fire

I am still listening to their rough demo cuts with the simple shit mixes and it sounds pretty good. If these guys were given a few more years, some studio time, and a record deal they could be the next Isis or Zombi. The sounds for the most part are either super epic and aggressive, or melancholy and heartbreakingly honest. For a two piece these guys can really fill a room with sound. My only real critique would to be pull back a little on the need to be big and epic, and focus more on delivering a few solid hook lines with the keys before dragging the listener off the next post-apocalyptic cliff.

yeah

I'm ready for you life ...
you ready for me?
fucking zombie dreams ...

10/07/09 Andrew W.K. / Calder Quartet at Swedish American Hall

There was a rock show disguised as a classical piano/string quartet playing last night. Now to be honest, I was really not sure what the expect, and I am a little tiny bit disappointed that there were no pianos burned during the incident, but then again, that is more of the dark side of rock and not the gleaming white heat that is Andrew W.K.
As Andrew pointed out, the show was at an amazing venue the Swedish American Music Hall, which for anyone from a small town, is like going to a large local grange hall for a show, except in this case, the hall is furbished really nicely and the architecture is kick ass.
Coming into the whole thing kind of left me a little flat when I realised that the show was not just Andrew W.K. backed by the Calder Quartet, but equal portions Calder Quartet and Andrew W.K.
Once I accepted this fact and stopped feeling kind of "tricked" into listening to really cool strings quartet music I really began to dig the show and get into what was going on.
It wasn't until Andrew broke into his own songs did the crowd go completely insane.
I had never heard a room full of people rally, and shout along to songs played on strings and piano, but now that I have... well the future is wide open!

After all that rocking it was time to pack it out,
I grabbed two t-shirts and a poster for $30 total (which is just about unheard of these days), and was stopped by my homeboy who wanted an autograph and a photo of A.W.K. himself, and so we waited.
And...
Eventually...
It was time to close up shop at the Swedish Hall, and we were bummed, and being ushered out slowly when the manager (a stout and striking man with black leather wrist gauntlets named Guy)stopped us and pointed out the Andrew had come out and to go up and get his attention.
In the end, we were rocked, and rolled, photographed, and signed, all with a positive inspiring message and a classical touch.
Go fig.

Spinnerette

BRODY DALLE
TONY BEVILACQUA
ALAIN JOHANNES
JACK IRONS

A power quatro of pop-rock-punk with a flare for hipster dance inspiration. These folks feature the driving, anthemic, bare bones guitar of Bevilacqua, the alternatingly teeth grinding and toe tapping bass lines of Johannes, backed by the minimalist, but heavy drumming of Irons, and topped off by the gruffly sang beauty of Dalle's vocals.
Their songs are designed to keep you grooving, and despite it maybe being in based taste, I must admit that the mix of booty shaking bass lines and driving guitar has me thinking a little of Queens of The Stone Age. Although when it comes to song structure I must admit that the quick, and sharp tunes by Spinnerette feel much shorter than those of The Queens of the Stone Age.
At their worst Spinnerette sounds a little like Pink except without the need to "act tough". At their best Spinnerette is danceable edgy pop that reminds you of all the best punk you listened to back in 1992.
And in case you were wondering:
A spinneret is a spiders silk making organ.
Whereas Spinnerette is just good music.

Myspace find of the day

The Pentacles
A perfect mix of surf, rock and punk aesthetic.
This five piece has caught the best upbeat moments of The Cure and mixed it with their own distinctive east-bay post surf sounds.
